How Did Yoga Find Its Way Into America?

How did yoga come to America? That’s a possible question any historian with interest in Yoga would ask given that the countries in the West were entirely different from what you see today. The truth is, America has gone through a lot of changes in the past 100 years. In the previous years, yoga was seen as another less important culture from the east. Reason being, many people in the West didn’t understand what it was while others saw it as blasphemy. Also, these were the times that skin color was an issue.

Apparently, if it were not for a few curious individuals, Yoga would not have made its way into the America. It is also likely that nobody would have tried to understand it.

So, who are these people who saw the potential in it? With whose help were they able to understand what Yoga is?

Well, making people in the west believe that Yoga meant something in human life was not one of the easiest tasks in history. It took a lot of sweat, from dealing with racism and ignorance to using teaching skills to educate a few individuals that made it all possible. It was all the work of messengers who were ready to deal with anything they were to encounter on their journey to make yoga known.

So, who were these messengers?

Swami Vivekananda

Swami Vivekananda is one of the well-messengers from the east who came to the west with the intention of making yoga known. In fact, he was the first individual to introduce Americans to Indian culture. In the year 1983, he was sent to the US where he got an opportunity to speak at the Parliament of World Religions successfully.

He also made his way into America and its surrounding offering lectures and introducing interested student to yoga practices such as meditation. He also went ahead and published several books after which, he returned to his home country, India. In the year 1899, he came back to the US where he remained until the year 1902 when he died.

Krishnamacharya

Krishnamacharya was the first messenger to transform hatha yoga. Before he came into the scene, yoga had no flow or postures such as tree pose, cobra pose and more. This messenger took the task in his hands and designed yoga poses that have remained popular up to date.

Among his students were Iyengar, Indra Devi, Desikachar and Pattabhi Jois who are also some of the most prominent yogis ever known on the planet. These four dedicated individuals traveled to America where they did all they could do to teach Yoga Asana making the work of Krishnamacharya easier.

Paramahansa Yogananda

Many sources say that Swami Vivekananda created a path that would later be followed by Paramahansa Yogananda. She was on a journey of seeking inner spiritual realms beyond her normal life when she met with another well-known yoga guru, Swami Yukteswar in the year 1920. After several years of practicing yoga, she made a trip to America to spread the gospel of yoga and meditation.

Just like Vivekananda, she got a chance to speak at the Parliament of World Religions. She also lectured many students, wrote books and found followers that led to discovering Self-Realization Fellowship. This was an organization that spread the gospel of yoga through books, chants as well as lectures.

Maharishi Mahesh Yogi

Another popular messenger was Maharishi who lived his life as a monk for many years. He also traveled around the globe to teach Transcendental Meditation. Being endorsed by Beatles in 1960 made him famous up to date and helped him spread the eastern culture and philosophy to many parts of the world.

As you can see, it had to take several dedicated messengers to transform the West to what you see now. These agents left everything behind to follow one path that is, helping people realize how practicing yoga can better their lives. They worked hard traveling around the world and into the West offering lectures and writing books with the aim of creating a better understanding of yoga. You can learn more about it at yoga at home | yoga burn review. Even though there are still some people spreading the gospel; we can say that these four individuals build the foundation. Without them, Yoga would still be just another isolated culture in the east.
